A Surgeon's Christmas Wishlist

November 24, 2021

Hola! When I started this blog I was a medical student, as a hobby to distract myself from a demanding course schedule. Now, I'm a third year general surgery resident! I wish I could have kept this up more but, as you can imagine, life as a surgery resident is hectic to say the least! Anyway, I'm coming back to you with a post just in time for Black Friday or Cyber Monday shopping! Below I list all the things any surgeon would love to have under the tree this year:

  1. Scrubs: I can't imagine anything better than finding a pair of scrubs by FIGS under the Christmas tree. These, in "surgical green", are perfect for any surgeon in your life!
  2. Dansko clogs: When spending an average of 80 hours a week either standing in the operating room or walking around the hospital, we appreciate comfy shoes and these by Dansko are not the cutest but are most definitely the most comfortable thing to have on your feet.
  3. Tennis shoes: Sometimes Dansko clogs just don't go with my choice of scrubs for the day (i.e. joggers) and those are days when I prefer to use tennis shoes. This pair from Adidas are super cute and their Ultraboost line is *ultra* comfortable.
  4. Apple watch/smart watch: I cannot live without my Apple watch! I for one hate constantly looking at my phone and having a smart watch lets me handle quicker communication without handling my phone. I use it to communicate with my team, calculate patient information, and keep track of my activity.
  5. Apple AirPods Pro/wireless earbuds: Be it to listen to a surgery podcast or some music while writing progress notes, wireless earbuds are a must for any resident.
  6. Sunrise alarm clock: We have to wake up at ungodly hours to start our day, usually hours before the sun comes up. So having an alarm clock that brings in that light into their room can make waking up so early feel more natural.
  7. Wireless speaker: Yes, we do listen to music in the operating room and for that a wireless speaker would make a perfect gift!
  8. Jacket: These jackets are definitely a splurge item but trust me, they are worth it!
  9. Heattech lace camisole: These are my secret to staying warm during 24 hour on call nights! They are "insulating, bio-warming, moisture-wicking, odor control, moisturizing, anti-static feature", and cheap!
  10. Heattech leggings: Pair these with the camisole and they'll stay nice and warm walking around a freezing hospital at 3am.
  11. Wireless bra: I could not stand 24+ hours in a wired bra so these are a must during calls.
  12. Behind the Knife ABSITE Podcast Companion: The surgery in-training exam (ABSITE) is coming up and this is an amazing companion to their ABSITE review series!
  13. Microsoft Surface Pro: For everything from studying to preparing presentations, a tablet/laptop of some sort is a must.

  1. Notepads: A cute little notepad to write down important information. The key is for it to be small enough to fit in their white coat pocket!
  2. Invisibobble: Perfect for tying back their hair without kinking it.
  3. Pin: This would look adorable on their white coat!
  4. Hand warmers: These are an essential for me during cold nights in the hospital!
  5. Badge reel: A necessity for any doctor so might as well have a cute one!
  6. Compression socks: Spending 12+ hours a day on our feet means edematous ankles which is NOT cute.
  7. Masks:, but make it cute.
  8. Pens: The best pens ever in existence.

What's on your Christmas wish list this year?

December 9, 2020

It's almost here: the end of 2020! I'm as excited as all of you to celebrate a new year with new potential and possibilities. I'm also anxious to leave all the not-so-good things that have happened behind and start anew. Here's a list of a few things I loved this year.

  • The best thing I did this year was take a break from it all and head over to Cabo San Lucas. See my whole post on the trip, including outfit information, here.
  • This year I also took a deep look into my relationship with God. I saw that there was still so much work to be done there and so much work to be done in myself as a person. I subscribed to She Reads Truth and have honestly felt so much closer to Him. I'm currently reading the Advent Study Book and highly recommend! Check out their subscription box here.
  • Since COVID-19, gyms have been closed so I've relied heavily on my Sweat subscription to keep me in shape! It offers simple workouts that can be done at home with little to no equipment.

  • I think we all hit Netflix hard this year! I binged watched the following shows:
    • The Crown (5/5 ⭐)
    • The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon Prime Video) (5/5 ⭐)
    • Money Heist (5/5 ⭐)
    • Emily in Paris (4/5 ⭐)
    • Grace and Frankie (5/5 ⭐)
    • Monk (Amazon Prime Video) (5/5 ⭐)
    • Great British Baking Show (5/5 ⭐)
    • The Duchess (2/5 ⭐)
    • Schitt's Creek (4/5 ⭐)
    • Man with a Plan (4/5 ⭐)
    • Dream Home Makeover (5/5 ⭐)
    • Get Organized with The Home Edit (3/5 ⭐)
    • Queer Eye (5/5 ⭐)
    • Cheer (4/5 ⭐)
    • Guilty pleasures: Selling Sunset, Are You the One?, Love is Blind
  • Loved these movies:
    • Holidate (4/5 ⭐)
    • Feel the Beat (4/5 ⭐)
    • Life Itself (Amazon Prime Video) (3/5 ⭐)
    • Enola Holmes (4/5 ⭐)
    • Eurovision (4/5 ⭐)
    • The Croods: A New Age: saw this at my first ever drive-in theater and loved it! (5/5 ⭐)
  • Also enjoyed the following books:

Let me know some of your favorites so I too can become obsessed!

Cabo San Lucas

December 3, 2020

Hola! As always, it's been a long time! A lot has happened since I last wrote, in my life and worldwide. I'm a little rusty but wanted to share a trip I recently took to Cabo San Lucas. I was in desperate need of quality time with myself and this trip was just what the doctor order (and I'm my own doctor, get it? hahaha) Here are a few snaps and outfit details. I hope this is a sign of me dusting off my blogging boots and getting back into it. I hope you're all still up for the ride!

A huge thank you to my dear friend Patricia (follow her Instagram) for coming along with me!

Travel outfit
Jacket (sold out, similar). T-shirt. Leggings. Necklace.

We stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel Los Cabos where we enjoyed an all-inclusive resort which is perfect when all you have in mind is to relax and not stress about the details of your vacation. On the day we arrived we had a smooth check-in, toured the room/hotel, and celebrated my birthday at the Mexican themed restaurant.

We started our full day at the resort with a massage at Rock Spa. I booked a deep tissue massage and enjoyed from the sauna, steam room, and hydrotherapy experience. It was the perfect way to peel off all the stress I was carrying and start off our vacation! We spent the rest of the day lounging by the pool, walking by the shore, and had dinner at the Zen Teppanyaki restaurant.

This was followed by a tour through the city of Cabo San Lucas and a shopping trip. We found a never ending passageway of local stores and bought tons of souvenirs. I loved all the bright colors! We then spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool.

Day four was spent, you guessed it, by the pool! We took full advantage of the "all-inclusive" situation enjoying pool-side meals and wine. We also had fun painting some pottery as an additional souvenir. Then we saw the sunset, had dinner, and put on some face masks!

For our last full day we went on a boat tour to the Arch, had lunch at The Sand Bar right on San Lucas Bay, enjoyed time at the beach, extra time by the pool, and a final dinner. It all sums up to the perfect holiday!

30 things I learned before turning 30

November 27, 2019

Hola! It's been a very long time since I wrote here last. In this period, a LOT of things have happened. One of them being my turning the big 3-0. I'll be honest, I'm the type of person who always gets the birthday blues. I'm usually overcome by a general feeling of sadness on my birthday. It's not something I can control, despite my hardest attempts. Have you ever experienced this? Doesn't it suck?

This year I was adamant to keep the birthday blues at bay. On that note, we gathered all the people dearest to me and had a big celebration! It was one of the best days ever! Initially, I was dreading leaving my 20's behind but, looking back, I accomplished so much in that decade: I entered and finished medical school, matched into a general surgery residency program, got married, got a puppy, traveled, became an aunt, and so much more. And to keep the ball moving in the positive direction this new year of life, I've decided to share a list of things I've learned in these 30 years. Here they are (in no particular order):

1. Don't take yourself too seriously. Guys, life's too short to be worried about what other people are thinking. If you feel like going to the movies in sweats, do it. If you feel like dancing in the plaza, do it. If you want to belt out all your favorite oldies with your friends on a night out, do it.

2. Family is the most important. Make time to spend with them. My grandfather has Alzheimer's disease and I recently interviewed him using StoryCorps but all I could think about was how I wished I would have done it sooner.

3. Your parents are cooler than you think. Dude, I'm serious. One day the most called person on your phone will be your mom.

4. Don't skip your skincare routine. I'm guilty of being "too tired" and skipping my nighttime routine one too many times. I promised my 30-year-old self to never do so again. Moisturize! Use sunscreen! Your skin will thank you!

5. Do what makes you happy. Short and sweet.

6. Challenge yourself daily. Whether it be with a harder workout routine or learning something new to cook, challenge yourself.

7. Giving is better than receiving. Hands down! There's nothing more gratifying than seeing someone's face light up as they open a meaningful gift.

8. A to-do list is the procrastinator's best friend. How satisfying is it to check things off?

9. Quality over quantity when it comes to friendship. I've had the same group of girlfriends since high school with a few added along the way and I couldn't be prouder of the women they've become. We barely talk nowadays because we all lead such busy lives but, you can bet that we'd be there for each other in a millisecond if they needed us.

10. Time mends broken hearts. There's a saying here in Puerto Rico: "Lo mejor que hizo Dios fue un dia tras otro". This basically translates into: The best thing God did was one day after another. It means that no matter how sad or heartbroken you feel today, tomorrow will be a new day and you have to trust that you'll feel a little better.

11. Nobody's perfect.

12. Time waits for no one. Take advantage of every day and live it to the fullest!

13. "I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become." You might remember this quote from my post on what I learned in medical school. This is the quote that kept me pushing through when I failed my first board exam. It was one of the hardest things I ever went through but it was one of the things that made me stronger.

14. Learn to forgive. Holding on to anger and grudges can only weigh you down.

15. You can't change how other people act but you can change how you respond to them.

16. Keep your home organized. An organized living space leads to a clutter-free mind. Plus, losing things sucks.

17. Love your body. Love every inch of it. Every scar. Every stretch mark. Every once of cellulite.

18. Laugh as much as possible.

19. Travel often. We aren't all able to do so for so many reasons (e.g. economically, schedules, etc.) but you don't need to fly to India to learn something new about culture or yourself. Find some time to explore locally. You never know what new magical place you'll find.

20. One healthy choice leads to another. One morning you're going to the gym next thing you know, you're skipping that pizza you had your eye on for lunch and opting for a healthier choice instead.

21. Everybody needs a hobby. Find something that keeps you inspired. Learn a new language, go hiking, start a blog!

22. Do what works for you. What works for your friend may not necessarily work for you and that's FINE. You do you.

23. Be present. Let go of your phone at the dinner table and have conversations. No moment happens twice.

24. Be grateful, count your blessings. "Blessings" by Florida Georgia Line is playing in my head right now.

25. Someone else's success doesn't diminish yours. Coming from a very competitive field (medicine and surgery on top of that), this is one that I constantly have to remind myself of.

26. Record your life. Take photos, record videos. Have them to look back on and smile, to show your future children and hopefully grandchildren, to cherish.

27. Always take off your makeup before going to sleep. ALWAYS!

28. Be honest. With your loved ones, with the world, and with yourself.

29. It's okay to binge-watch Netflix in your PJs eating ice cream.

30. Life is a gift.

What is one thing you've learned over your life that has changed you? Let me know below.

Con amor,
Maria Eugenia
